Imagine if you knew your expiration date? Gasp! Do you think it would motivate you to make changes to your current lifestyle in an effort to extend your shelf life? I don’t necessarily want to know my ‘end date’ but I do want to know that the choices I make today allow me to live my best life so that I can at least remain ‘fresh’ on the shelf for some time yet.

There is no denying the benefit of exercise. Without it, our body slowly loses its strength, stamina and ability to function properly. It’s like the old saying: you don’t stop moving from growing old, you grow old from lack of movement.

It’s that simple; exercise increases muscle strength, which in turn increases your ability to do other physical activities. That 45 minutes of strength work in the gym on a regular basis, will allow you to spend more time on the ski hill, shovel the entire driveway or just keep up with the kids in the park. Not to mention the overall feeling of physical contentment.

So the next time you find yourself in a ‘self debate’ about whether or not you should workout today or make that training session, stop and ask yourself why you started in the first place. The occasional workout can only do so much for your shelf life. My advice, make it a lifestyle choice and “just keep showing up”! Not all workouts or training sessions are going to be awesome but how awesome, if you at least show up for them.

Creating a ‘just show up’ mentality does not mean that you need to go to the gym every day, 365 days a year. What it means; establish your goals and put a plan in place to help you achieve them. If everyday you are creating excuses as to why you can’t do one thing or the other, maybe it’s time to look at why you are making excuses. 

If you miss a day, don’t worry about it. Everybody struggles once in a while. Just make sure you hit it again the next day. If what you’re doing just isn’t working for you, revisit your goal/s.
